I interviewed my friend Nathanael Seers who is a hypnocoach. He inspires me for his ongoing pursuit of personal and professional excellence.
1) Tell us more about yourself.
I am a Hypnocoach. It is a unique profession and a conversational starter when I meet new people. Whenever I mention the word hypnosis, many would tell me not to look into their eyes as they believe I will make them quack like a duck! In reality, all hypnoses are self-hypnosis and all of us have experience being in this state of trance in our daily life without actually realizing it. As a Hypnocoach, I am a coach who uses clinical hypnotherapy as a form of intervention, to help the client move to their desired state of mind by conditioning their subconscious mind.
I am also a Reality Therapist and this approach to counselling looks at the here-and-now actions of the client to help them have the ability to choose a better future for themselves. Choice Theory & Reality Therapy (CTRT) is a psychotherapy and counselling intervention developed by a renowned psychiatrist, Dr William Glasser, MD. In CTRT, the belief is that people become sick because they are experiencing distress resulting from a social problem, making the person out of sync with his psychological needs. Using the different tools in CTRT, I help clients determine what they really want and how they work towards getting what they want.
2. Why do you do what you do?
It started out as a journey of self discovery and self improvement in the 1990s. I trained in Clinical Hypnotherapy, Neuro-Linguistic Programming, Hypnocoaching, Emotion Freedom Technique, etc. The more I develop these skills, I realised that I have a passion and the tools to help people work out their issues. The greatest gratification is to see people with many challenges, overcome them and walk out transformed.
3. What are the common issues people come to you for?
Clients come to see me for many different challenges. It could be for goal-centred coaching to stress relief, anger management, sexual dysfunction, anxiety disorder and relationship issues. The list can go on.
One of the Axiom of Choice Theory states that, “All long-lasting psychological problems are relationship problems” It is either relationship with someone or something or with even yourself.
For any form of intervention to work, a client must want to change. And it is to give the power back to the individual, for they are ultimately are in charge of their mind and therefore their results. I often tell my clients that all of us make choices every day, even choosing not to choose is also a choice.
4. What are your future plans?
I have been researching into using CTRT into our daily lives. I realise that practicing the tools has changed my own life and I want to make it easier for clients to take back control of their own lives. I am developing workbooks and card systems to make it easy for people to understand and practice Choice theory. After all, the only person whose behaviour we can control is our own.
5) What is your advice for entrepreneurs or helping professionals?
I quote from Dr William Glasser that “to become more effective, you must learn what these people have learned: how you feel is not controlled by others or events. You are not the physical or psychological slave of your parents, husband, wife, child, boss, the economy, or anything else unless you choose to be.”
So take the first step in understanding yourself, begin to take charge of your life and the rest will come into place. No one can make you happy or unhappy, unless you choose it so. Be it entrepreneurs or helping professionals, find time to work on yourself, suss out your qualities and work on your weaknesses so that you can be grounded and be quick to see things clearly.
