Death by Breathplay?

Posted On: July 17, 2009

When David Carradine was found dead in a locked hotel room in Bangkok, Thailand on 3 June 2009, suicide was suspected.

However on closer look, David had an intricate web of ropes – one around his neck, another around his genitals and the two tied together.

Auto-erotic asphyxia brought to mind. One of the greatest and most dangerous sexual taboos, auto-erotic asphyxia is a method of increasing sexual excitement by restricting the oxygen supply to the brain, usually by tightening a noose around the neck.

Yet when sudden pressure is put on the vagus nerve in the neck, it can slow down the heart-beat and even stop it completely leading to a sudden cardiac death. Despite ‘Self-rescue’ devices, such as slip knots in the noose or a chair beneath it, one may lose consciousness before being able to release the pressure applied to their necks.
