Press Release – 3rd Sugar & Spice Mar 23 – 27, 2021

Posted On: March 6, 2021

Sugar and Spice 3rdAsia’s first virtual sexuality festival – Sugar and Spice returns for the third time!

Sugar and Spice was founded by Singaporean Chinese doctor Martha Tara Lee, a relationship counsellor and clinical sexologist holding a doctorate in human sexuality and a masters in counselling.

Dr Martha was inspired to launch Sugar and Spice after noticing a lack of sexual education and discussion within Asia. After participating in several sexuality festivals – held virtually due to the Covid-19 pandemic – she discovered that at each of these events she was one of the few, if not the only, Asian sex experts taking part.

“I saw all this amazing work my colleagues were doing and I asked myself. ‘If I did a virtual sexuality festival (not  just for the sake of it), what would it be?’ The answer came: an Asian one.”

The first two Sugar and Spice Festivals were held in the second half of 2020 and the third instalment is taking place online from March 23-27, 2021.

She says the Sugar and Spice Festival will question the conventional thinking that people raised in traditional societies and households are unable to express themselves with confidence and purpose when it comes to sex – their preferences and attitudes, and the impact of social discretion and judgement.

“I wanted to create a platform to debunk the misconception that ‘We Asians don’t talk about sex’, ‘We Asians aren’t like that’, and to support them in their sexuality. There are many of us (sexuality educators or sex-positive advocates), and many voices and messages are needed to bring about a healing around our sexuality and help us reclaim it”.

Due to the often conservative nature of Asian culture that makes sex a taboo topic at home and in schools, Sugar and Spice aims to impart positive messages and learning around sex – dealing with the good and the bad, the importance of sexual wellness, and empower participants to listen, observe, learn and attain sexual freedom on their own.

Dr Martha has seen first hand how a lack of sex education can harm an individual’s attitude towards their sexual health, which also affects how they view themselves and others. She says that this can lead to sexual inhibition and problems experiencing pleasure, and their ability to achieve an orgasm when they  are both by themselves or with partners.

The online nature of Sugar and Spice Festival allows participants from all over the world to connect and interact with others who may have had similar experiences. The speakers and facilitators involved are all skilful and empathetic experts in their fields, ensuring that the sessions will be dynamic, interactive and informative.

The Festival programme includes a range of presentations,  workshops, panel discussions and guided movement sessions. Participants will discuss the impact of growing up in Asian households,  debunk sexual myths, sex issues involving the disabled, misconceptions about of BDSM, and ways to harness the power of your vulnerability.

Sugar and Spice Festival aims to help close the gap in sex education in Asia and provide positive role models regarding sexual wellness.  It’s time to encourage openness and understanding inside communities that are quick to shun any discussion about sex.

In the words of Brene Brown: “Vulnerability is about showing up and being seen.
