
5 Yoga Poses to Help Relieve Vaginismus

1. Supta Baddha Konasana (Reclining Bound Angle Pose)
This restorative pose opens up the pelvic area and promotes relaxation.
a. Lie on your back and bring the soles of your feet together, letting your knees fall open.
b. Place your arms by your sides with palms facing up.
c. Hold the pose for 5-10 minutes, focusing on your breath.

2. Viparita Karani (Legs-Up-The-Wall Pose)
This pose helps in calming the nervous system and gently stretches the pelvic floor muscles.
a. Lie on your back and extend your legs up the wall.
b. Keep your hips as close to the wall as possible.
c. Hold for 5-10 minutes, breathing deeply.

3. Balasana (Child’s Pose)
Child’s Pose is a gentle stretch for the lower back, hips, and thighs, promoting relaxation and reducing tension.
a. Kneel on the mat with your big toes touching and knees apart.
b. Sit back on your heels and extend your arms forward, resting your forehead on the mat.
c. Hold for 1-3 minutes, focusing on your breath.

4. Setu Bandhasana (Bridge Pose)
Bridge Pose strengthens the pelvic floor muscles and helps in reducing spasms.
a. Lie on your back with your knees bent and feet hip-width apart.
b. Lift your hips towards the ceiling while pressing your feet into the mat.
c. Clasp your hands under your back and hold for 1-2 minutes.

5. Paschimottanasana (Seated Forward Bend)
This pose stretches the spine, shoulders, and hamstrings, and helps in promoting relaxation.
a. Sit with your legs extended in front of you.
b. Reach forward to grasp your feet, lengthening your spine.
c. Hold for 1-2 minutes, breathing deeply.

About Dr. Martha Tara Lee
Dr. Martha Tara Lee has been a passionate advocate for positive sexuality since 2007. With a Doctorate in Human Sexuality and a Master’s in Counseling, she founded Eros Coaching in 2009 to help individuals and couples lead self-actualized and pleasurable lives. Her expertise includes working with couples in unconsummated marriages, individuals with sexual inhibitions or desire discrepancies, men facing erection and ejaculation concerns, and members of the LGBTQIA+ and kink communities. She welcomes people of all sexual orientations and offers both online and in-person consultations in English and Mandarin.
Dr. Lee is the only certified sexuality educator by the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists (AASECT) in the region since 2011, and became an AASECT-certified sexuality educator supervisor in 2018.
