Book Review: The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari by Robin Sharma

Posted On: December 25, 2016

I am a fan of Robin Sharma. I love his book The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari: A Fable About Fulfilling Your Dreams and Reaching Your Destiny so much that I gave it away as a Christmas present to my friends one year. This book was also listed as one of top 10 books that changed my life. Recently, I re-visited the book, and decided to write this review.

The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari by Robin SharmaIn this book, Julian Mantle is a superstar lawyer whose out-of-balance lifestyle leads him to a near-fatal heart attack in a packed courtroom. He quits his job, goes on a spiritual odyssey only to return to share his system with a younger lawyer (written through the eyes of the author). Through the book, we learn this system which promises to release the potential of the mind, body and soul, so as to live life with passion, purpose, and peace.

The book covers seven timeless virtues of enlightened living over 13 chapters. They include: Master Your Mind; Follow Your Purpose; Practice Kaizen; Live with Discipline; Respect Your Time; Selflessly Serve Others; Embrace the Present. This is not a book you’d want to speed-read, but instead one you’d probably want to be taking notes of. Having taken those notes, it is truly about application of what you’ve learned.

Re-reading this book was bitter-sweet. I asked myself how my life has transformed since the last time I read it – at least eight years ago. I cannot but feel I’ve fallen short – and wonder how much more my life would have transformed if I had only constantly applied some of the principles taught (I’m not blaming or shaming myself here, but reflecting). All is not lost, since re-reading this book, I’ve returned to my daily meditation practice at 6a.m. (not quite back to 5a.m. yet). As I write this, I’m relooking at my notes – what should I implement next?

Blending ancient Eastern spiritual wisdom and Western success principles, this tale provides a step-by-step approach to living with greater abundance, balance and joy. You will play bigger, show up more, be the success you have always been meant to be – but, like me, will you apply what you’ve learned? This book will transform your life for the better if you will only do.
