Personal Story: “I Was Attending a Free-Form Movement Class Regularly…”

Posted On: April 5, 2022

I Was Attending a Free-Form Movement Class Regularly...Years ago, I was attending a free-form movement class regularly and got to know a person whom I knew was a popular NLP coach in Singapore. Since I knew little about NLP, I was curious about his work.

After one session, I found myself walking with him and his followers to the MRT station and took the opportunity to ask more about his work. I was actually mentally prepared and eager to be his student.

Yet the moment he started doing name-dropping of his students who are famous in their own right, I was completely turned off. If he could boost about having famous students (undoubtedly without consent), he could easily do this to me and seemingly take credit for all my achievements even if his teaching might just a small part of my body of training and knowledge. He felt unsafe.

As coaches, we are honed in the importance of ethics, confidentiality, and privacy of clients so this was a big no-no – what more coming from a master trainer NLP practitioner.

After that, my impression of him totally changed – from interest in his work, to disgust of his character, and avoidance of the person totally. How we do something is how we do everything. Yes, people are capable of change but there’s absolutely no honor in putting ourselves in harm’s way either.
