Vaginismus and Inhibition around Sex

What is Vaginismus?

Vaginismus is a condition characterized by involuntary muscle tension in the pelvic floor muscles surrounding the vagina, making penetration painful or impossible. It can greatly impact a person’s sex life and overall well-being. 🌺

Myths and Misconceptions around Vaginismus

There are many myths and misconceptions surrounding Vaginismus, such as it being purely psychological or that it can be easily overcome with relaxation techniques. In reality, Vaginismus is a complex condition that may have physical, emotional, and psychological components that require specialized treatment and support. 🧠

Myth 1: Vaginismus is just a mental issue.
Truth: Vaginismus is a complex condition that can have physical, emotional, and psychological components. It is not solely a mental issue.

Myth 2: Vaginismus can be easily overcome with relaxation techniques.
Truth: While relaxation techniques can be helpful, overcoming vaginismus often requires a comprehensive treatment plan that may include physical therapy, counseling, and other interventions. In my experience working with people with Vaginismus since 2009, I have come to call it a fear of the unknown with sexuality education and counseling helping the most.

Myth 3: Vaginismus only affects women who are inexperienced or anxious about sex.
Truth: Vaginismus can affect women of all ages and sexual experiences. It is not solely related to anxiety or inexperience.

Myth 4: Vaginismus is rare.
Truth: Vaginismus is more common than many people realize. It is estimated to affect around 1-7% of women.

Myth 5: Vaginismus is untreatable.
Truth: Vaginismus is a treatable condition. With the right support, resources, and treatment, many individuals with vaginismus can overcome their symptoms and improve their quality of life.

Myth 6: Vaginismus is just a result of not trying hard enough or not using enough lubrication.
Truth: Vaginismus is a medical condition characterized by involuntary muscle spasms in the pelvic floor muscles. It is not simply a matter of trying harder or using more lubrication during penetration.

Myth 7: Vaginismus can be cured by forcefully inserting objects into the vagina.
Truth: Forcefully inserting objects into the vagina is not a recommended or effective treatment for vaginismus. In fact, it can cause further pain and trauma, exacerbating the condition.

Myth 8: People have vaginismus because it is “God’s will” or a punishment for their actions.
Truth: Vaginismus is a medical condition with physical and psychological causes. It is not a punishment from a higher power or a result of any specific actions. Blaming vaginismus on divine will can perpetuate harmful misconceptions and hinder individuals from seeking proper treatment and support.

Myth 9: Vaginismus only affects women.
Truth: While vaginismus is more commonly reported in women, it can also affect individuals assigned male at birth. It is important to recognize that vaginismus can impact people of all genders.

Myth 10: Vaginismus will go away on its own over time.
Truth: While some cases of vaginismus may improve over time, many individuals require treatment and support to effectively manage and overcome the condition. Seeking help from healthcare professionals is crucial for addressing vaginismus effectively.
